Here are some dates and the main names that have marked the history of intrusion alarm systems:
1853 August Russell Pope invented the first burglar alarm system. Its system consists of an electrical circuit installed on doors and windows. The circuit closes when the doors and the windows are opened to let the current flow. This current comes from a battery to power a magnet which will produce electromagnetic vibrations. The vibrations will drag a hammer over a bell until the door or the window closes.
The history of alarm systems continues with The Businessman Edwin Holmes. Because this one bought the patent of Mr. Russel Pope in 1857 and marketed it in New York. These clients were the wealthy people of New York City as well as its traders.
Holmes also came up with the idea of hooking up alarm systems by phone lines to his office. He thus gave birth to the first central alarm system.
Monitoring central alarms
1905 AT&T (American Telephone and Telegraph Company) enters the security systems industry by acquiring the company from Holmes. AT&T introduced police calls for trespassing and firefighters for fires.
Motion detectors
1970 was the year of the introduction of motion detectors in the alarm systems industry. Since then, Motion detectors have been an important component of alarm systems.

Today the systems have evolved a lot. They offer us various options and various solutions. They contain many more components. This gives them the possibility of supervising several events. Not only they supervise intrusion, but many events could be controlled. For example: The temperature variation. Detection of smoke or gas etc. They can be connected to the control panels by dedicated telephone lines. By mobile phone or internet. As they can also be integrated with other systems. Such as video surveillance or access control.
